Interprofessional Case Study – Stroke
MN is a 78-year-old female who was just admitted to the hospitaldue to a moderate stroke. MN is having weakness and limitedmobility on the left side of her body. She is unable to use herleft arm for daily activities and is unable to put pressure on herleft leg. Her mouth is drooping to the left and she has difficultyeating and keeping food down. Her mental acuity comes and goes, andher short-term memory is impaired.
MN was given an IV and a blood thinner to reduce the risk ofhaving another stroke. MN is continuing her blood pressure-loweringmedications she was on prior to being admitted to the hospital. Forthe time being, her diet order is NPO (nothing by mouth) and thedoctor ordered a consult with the speech pathologist.
MN’s history states that her weight was stable for the past sixmonths and she has had a good appetite. Prior to the stroke, shewas able to perform most of her activities of daily independently.She needed assistance lifting heavy objects.
MN’s husband died two years ago from a heart attack and MN hasbeen living alone in her two-story condo. Her son lives about 20minutes away and checks on her once a month. MN’s daughter-in-lawmentioned that MN has seemed depressed during the previous 3-4visits to her house.
