Otoscopic examination of a patients internal ear reveals asignificant amount of cerumen that makes visualization of thetympanic membrane difficult. Provided no contraindication exist,the nurse may remove cerumen by:

a. irrigating the patients ear with warm water

b. instilling normal saline and having it soak for 1 to 2hours

c. instilling hypertonic solution under pressure

d. manually removing the cerumen with cotton swabs
