Case study Joyce Nakamarra is a Warlpiri woman who used to live in Yuendumu north-west of Alice Springs. She moved to Adelaide to be close to her cousin, Evelyn whose grandson is playing football in the state competition. Joyce lives in a hostel for Aboriginal people who visit Adelaide for medical treatment. Evelyn and her grandson, Patrick live in a small flat supplied by the football club. Joyce has very poor eyesight and is having dialysis 3 times a week because of kidney failure brought on by her untreated type 2 diabetes. Joyce enjoys football and she is a fierce crows supporter as well as barracking for North Adelaide, the team of her cousin’s grandson. Joyce speaks Warlpiri and a little English. She was a very good artist and some of her paintings are hanging in Tandanya. She misses being able to perform ceremonies as she would if she was living at home.
