Many doctors were trained to cut the umbilical cord immediatelyafter the birth. Recent research suggests that:

the procedure is appropriate and there are no benefits fordelaying it.

infants who do not have the umbilical cord cut within one minuteof birth at much higher risk of cerebral palsy and/or spinabifida.

the cord should remain in place until the infant is at home forone week and the father should be trained in how to appropriatelyclamp and cut it.

delaying the cut for as little as 3 minutes may be helpful, particularly in areas where iron deficiency isproblematic.
