Dr. Collins called Nurse Nan from the patient’s room and confided, “Mr. Brown is in bad shape. His left posteromedial papillary muscle was damaged from the heart attack. The papillary muscle is no longer able to maintain closure of the valve, and this has result in valve prolapse. With decreasing cardiac output, this patient is in for a fight for his life.” Nurse Nan knew that maintaining cardiac output was necessary for adequate blood flow through the body. As Dr. Collins walked away, Nurse Nan composed herself to tell Mrs. Brown the bad news and returned to the patient’s room. She explained to Mrs. Brown that her husband had left-sided heart failure and that his blood pressure was slowly and steadily decreasing. 10. How would blood flow be disrupted when this valve on the left side of the heart prolapsed? Using your own words, in 1 or 2 short sentences explain what would happen to blood flow. Be sure to use specific anatomy of the heart to describe the disrupted blood flow. Use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation to receive full credit. Copied and pasted answers may receive 0 credit. (2 points) 11. Would this valve prolapse-increase, decrease or not change-stroke volume from the left ventricle? Type answer as one of the 3 choices given using lowercase letters and separating words with one space if more than one word is part of the correct answer. (1 point) 12. Would this valve prolapse-increase, decrease or not change- cardiac output from the heart? Type answer as one of the 3 choices given using lowercase letters and separating words with one space if more than one word is part of the correct answer. (1 point) 13. What is the mathematical equation used to determine cardiac output? Type answer using abbreviations for all parts of the equation. Use capital letters and one space between parts of the equation. The mathematical symbols for equals (=), plus (+), minus (-), multiply (x) or divide (/) may also be used if necessary. (1 point) 14. From this equation, can you explain why Mr. Brown’s heart rate is higher than normal? Type answer as 1 or 2 short sentences using your own words, correct spelling, grammar and punctuation to receive full credit. Be sure to refer back to the equation in question 13 and discuss how all parts would be affected. Copied and pasted answers may receive credit. (2 points)
