6 A 12-hour-old infant was transferred for admission to the university hospital neonatal intensive care unit for respiratory problems after being born at a community hospital by Was exhibiting respiratory symptoms consistent with aspiration of meconium at the time of the delivery. The infant had low Apgar scores of 5 and 6 with tachypnea and cyanosis. On admission, the infant was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation and maintained on it for 48 hours. Within 1 day, the infant’s chest x-ray demonstrated patchy infiltrates. The neonatologist diagnosed the infant as having meconium aspiration pneumonia with no signs of pulmonary hypertension as a consequence of the pneumonia.
