The patient has weak, tiny andfragile veins. Failing extraction once, the phlebotomist decided toperform arterial blood collection even if she had no training. Shethen completed the procedure and did not perform proper aftercare.After the phlebotomist left, the nurses noticed that the site wasstill bleeding. The ICU called the laboratory and complained aboutthe incident. The investigation then comes in, and the phlebotomistjust denied the accusation saying she extracted only the basilicvein.
  3. The phlebotomist on duty was assigned to do blood collection toa patient confined in the Orthopedic Surgery unit. Your patient wasa diabetic patient with foot gangrene. When she entered the room,the phlebotomist showed disgust and hesitation to continue theblood collection because of the awful smell from the gangrenousfeet. She did show this attitude until she completed the procedure,which the patient noticed. The patient was uncomfortable throughoutthe process and was ashamed of the phlebotomist.
