12. Demonstrate “oxygen debt and recovery by measuring pulse rate. Find a set of stairs. Use a stopwatch and take the pulse of one of the team members for 30 seconds after standing still for three minutes. Double the observed pulse to determine the “resting” heart rate in beats per minute. Have the person step up on the first stair with both feet (one at a time) then step back down again. Repeat this for three minutes at a rate of two seconds per cycle (up and back down). At the end of three minutes, take the person’s pulse for 30 seconds and determine the pulse rate (beats/minute). Take the person’s pulse at each minute for five minutes and plot the recovery curve with time on the x-axis and heart rate on the y-axis. Label the area under the curve that represents the “oxygen debt” repayment. Repeat the some procedure for your partner.
