A t-test is an inferential statistic used to determineif there is a significant difference between the means of the twogroups. A t-test uses the t-statistic, t-distribution, and thedegrees of freedom to determine the statistical significance.“T-tests can be divided into two types. There is the independentt-test, which can be used when the two groups under comparison areindependent of each other, and the paired t-test, which can be usedwhen the two groups under comparison are dependent on each other”(Kim, 2015). There is no required sample size for a t-test,however, the problem with low sample size is with regard to thepower of the test. The test needs to be large enough to estimatethe variance of variances. An example would be to evaluate whetherthere was a difference in smokers’ daily consumption of cigarettesafter a 6-week therapy course. The two groups would be before andafter. The dependent variable is one that is considered to becontinuous. This would be the number of hours in a day. Theindependent variable would be the people in the group, the beforemeasurement of daily cigarettes, and then again measuring after thetherapy. The research sample size would be 50 people to ensureaccurate results and the research question would be “Does a 6-weektherapy program decrease the number of cigarettes smoked perday?”
