Bee venom contains phospholipase A2, which is responsible for
some of the inflammatory effects of a bee sting. A schematic
drawing of the actice site is shown below. Notice the aspartate and
histidine residues in the active site, as well as the positions of
the water molecule. Based on protease mechanisms, propose a
chemical mechanism for the phospholipase A2 reaction. In your
answer show Ca2+, Gly10, His34 and Asp64 at each step; the other
residues do not need to be included in your answer.
IMPORTANT: Each step in your mechanism should be enclosed in a
box. Answers must be neatly drawn; if the graders judge your answer
to be too messy or difficult to read, you will receive 0 points for
the question.
