CASE STUDY 25 Dementia care Steve Wood Mrs Jean Jones is 82 years old and was recently diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by the memory assessment team. Her husband, George, died four years ago following a major stroke and Jean now lives alone in a terraced house in a small, rural community. She moved there more than twenty years after retiring, following a successful career as a primary school teacher, and being a headmistress for more than ten years. For some years Jean played an active role in the local village community, including parish council work and managing the local post office. Jean has two daughters, Clare, aged 48, and Jill, aged 46, who live about 200 miles away in a large town. Jean’s daughters are married with teenage children and visit her once a month. Although neighbours and friends support Jean, they have become increasingly concerned that her memory is worsening, and have had to help her return home on a number of occasions after she was found wandering and lost in local streets, saying that she was looking for the school children to start their maths lesson. A community psychiatric nurse (CPN) is visiting Mrs Jones for the first time. Jean welcomes the CPN to her house but states that she does not understand why they are calling, and has no recollection of being assessed at the memory clinic or of being found wandering in the street. Jean says that she is coping well and kept very busy with her parish council work.
