focus on different marine biomes and population biology. As with
terrestrial biomes, marine biomes also each have particular climate
conditions and other factors that determine location on the planet.
When we consider human impacts upon organisms within biomes on land
and in the sea, population biology comes into play. Dynamics of
population growth and factors that limit it can be interrupted
through resource extraction, habitat fragmentation, and pollution.
Instructions Marine Ecosystems, and “Fishing to
Extinction?” “Factors that regulate population growth.”
In this exercise, we will go back to Google Earth. Open Google
Earth, and in the search box enter Great Barrier Reef, Queensland.
Click Search. Explore the reefs Questions to Complete: 1.What are
the key living things that are found in a coral reef? Describe at
least one other marine biome discussed in Section 5.2. 1.What are
some human actions that can harm the coral reefs? What evidence can
be seen of these risks in this area? What is the evidence? (Zoom
out until you can see Cairns on the mainland. Then zoom in and
examine the area, particularly the areas just north of Cairns, near
Barron. Look for activities that could contribute to murky water in
the bay.)
