Fred was an SP who was hired by the hospital to help train some medical students how to better interact with mentally ill patients in the Emergency Department. Fred was excited because he had prepared quite a bit for this day. It was important to Fred because he had a brother with schizophrenia and he wanted to make sure the medical students had a good understanding of how to interact with mentally ill patients. You see, his brother had been mistreated by police, first responders, and emergency department staff and he was on a mission to make sure he could do his part to change the system”. Fred got to work, and got into character. While he was in the dressing room of the ED, he overheard the medical students talking about a patient they had seen earlier. The medical students used the patient’s name and diagnosis and were joking about the woman’s hysterical behavior when she presented to the ED after being found in the middle of an intersection waving around a gun and scantily clad after a “mental breakdown”. Fred was furious when he then had to interact with the same medical students during the simulation. He could not focus, and the simulation did not go very well. During the debriefing, he lashed out at everyone. He could no longer hold back his hostility at the carelessness and unprofessional behavior of the medical students. He cried and screamed at the medical students and left, swearing that he would never trust a doctor or anyone in the system again”. The medical students were also distraught. They realized that they had made a huge mistake and their professor failed them for their course. The hospital lost a great SP in Fred. It was a lose, lose situation all around. Complete a minimum two-page discussion on what went wrong with the above scenario. What steps could have been put into place to prevent the complete meltdown of Fred and where does the blame lie? Discuss what potential loopholes and negative consequences can become of a breatkdown in confidentiality. What lasting impacts can occur when trust is broken?
