SCENARIO

Clark is a 65-yearold man referred to Happy Home Care, a residential careprovider.

Clark has beendiagnosed with dementia and has lived alone in his home. He lefthis home three years ago and is now living in the streets. He staysin one area for at least a week and then moves to another. Youlearned from your referral networks that Clark would often beassaulted by teenagers in the streets, so he doesn’t stay long inone place.

Clark sometimes getshelp form other homeless adults to fight off the teenagers in thestreet. You learned that Clark has been an alcoholic when he wasyounger, and would often hit his wife and son when he’sintoxicated.

You speak with Clarkone day about his care plan. You told him that he might need tostay for some time in the centre until he feels well again. Hisface suddenly looked upset, walks away from you, and as he walkpast other residents in the centre, he started verbally abusingthem. Two male workers rushed to his side to stop him but hestarted throwing things across the room. Clarke hit one of theworkers on his way out of the centre.

The WHS policies andprocedures in Happy Home Care have been reviewed two years ago andit does not state what to do when clients show aggressive behaviourinside the centre as this rarely happens.
