Teri Dactyl is 17 years old. She comes to see you, the schoolnurse, when she fainted in class. Teri reports that she finds shehas no energy and falls asleep in class all of the time. Shethought it was just because she is so busy and school is so heavy.She also recently decided to become a vegan. She is pale, has asunken-eyes appearance, and complains of pain to her stomach, whichyou assess is in the upper left quadrant. When asked, she tells youshe is experiencing very heavy menstrual flows. On examination you note glossitis of her tongue. You alsonotice her hands and feet are white in colour and cool to thetouch. She reports that she has felt this way for “a really longtime now” and “just thought it was normal for me.”
