Tim has a headache from being stuck on the outside, so he takes
an asprin, which ia a weak acid (pka=3.5). Aspirin is absorbed
through the cells lining the stomach (PH=1.5) and the small
intstine (pH=6). In order for absorption to occur, the molecule
must pass through the cell membranes of Tim’s cells, a process
which depends upon the polarity of a molecule:charged and highly
polar molecules pass slowly through a cell membrane, wheras neutral
hydrophobic molecules pass quickly through. Would more aspirin be
absorbed in Tim’s stomach or his intestine? why?
